This Confederate States Laboratory ammunition crate was produced in Richmond in 1862 (or possibly early 1863). The original box resides in the collection of American Civil War Museum (formerly the Museum of the Confederacy) . A soldier made strong box (or ditty box) out of the the discarded ammo crate by placing hinges and pad lock on it, as well as carving his initials “J.H” and “Co I 60th VA REG” on the top of the lid.
