Pvt. Myers was wounded at the Battle of Winchester in June 1863 and sent home to Pennsylvania to recover. While convalescing, he left his field gear—including his original flannel shirt, blouse, and knapsack—behind with his family.
After recovering, Myers returned to the front lines. He was later captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864 and tragically died four months later as a prisoner of war at the notorious Andersonville POW camp in Georgia.
